Uncomfortable truth

Hospitality is not a visitor strategy

Good hosts create trust. Yet coffee, catering and comfortable seating are often used to disguise an unresolved reason for the right visitor to stay.

Hospitality can strengthen a valuable encounter. It cannot replace the reason for that encounter.

Hospitality gives people a pause, supports relationships and makes a demanding day more human. The problem begins when occupied tables become evidence that the stand is commercially effective.

Time on the stand looks like impact, but it is initially only time. A visitor can stay for forty minutes without gaining an insight or agreeing to a next step. A focused five-minute conversation can move a project much further.

A busy stand can be ineffective

Catering increases dwell time and visible activity. Neither reveals whether the relevant people were present or whether anything changed for them.

When success is judged by occupancy, familiar guests and incidental visitors consume the capacity intended for important conversations.

Give hospitality a narrative role

A drink can make room for a technical sketch, bridge a transition to personal exchange or support a confidential discussion. In each case it serves an encounter already moving somewhere.

The planning question is not only what to serve, but when it should appear and what it should make easier.

Service must not become an escape

Team members sometimes organise drinks when unsure how to continue. Service becomes an unconscious exit from recognising relevance and creating a next step.

Clear roles and simple handovers prevent that interruption. The person responsible for the relationship remains responsible when somebody else brings the coffee.

Hospitality can express character

Grounded, precise, regional, generous or unexpectedly simple: the way a company hosts can make its attitude tangible.

This is powerful for industrial companies whose strongest difference is often the quality of cooperation rather than a dramatic brand claim.

A tool for your team

The hospitality assignment

Give every hospitality element one function.

  1. Which relationship situation should become easier?
  2. At what point is it offered?
  3. Who remains responsible?
  4. What happens immediately afterwards?

The consequence

What this changes in practice.

Hospitality becomes valuable when it strengthens a relevant encounter and makes the company’s character credible. It becomes dangerous when it covers missing relevance.

Do not begin with the menu. Begin with the relationship situation the service should improve.
